You may see most people kickstart a diet 6-12 weeks before their holiday, so they can look good and over indulge; but, does your health stay on hold whilst you are away? This podcast is a bit different from our recent ones as we give our perspective of travelling and how we maintain our lifestyle to maximise our health. We do touch upon travel tips and below are the links to check for vaccinations/requirements when entering your selected country:

Going the gym is something we are familiar with (although many might not go) and the concept is to perform exercises for a set period of time; however, this hasn't always been the case. The gym has arguably been formed due to a lack of physical activity in the modern way of life, but we need to move more frequently outside of a gym environment. This podcast discusses what exercise we should be aiming for, the impacts on our risk of frailty, health benefits and whether it's as simple as just to burn some calories...

Dyslipidaemia (abnormal blood fat composition), is a leading course of cardiovascular conditions and we do not treat this risk like any others. With treatments that have gained a bad press (namely statins), patients are reluctant to address their cholesterol as they cannot feel the ill effects at present. From a health care professional, the guidelines and targets are ever moving, making treating such cohorts a difficult process. In this podcast, we aim to provide an insight into the importance of treatment and how to go about this.

Hypertension (high blood pressure) affects over 1 in 4 adults in England and is not viewed as serious as we think it should be. With no symptoms present in the majority of cases, why would you treat such a condition and surely it cannot be that bad? Sadly, it is this reason that makes this condition so devastating and we hope to make you more aware of this. Below is the link that shows you how to take your blood pressure at home:

In this week's episode, we discuss a heart condition that is being diagnosed at an alarming rate and the majority of the population will be unaware of this. Atrial fibrillation carries an unwanted stroke risk, which is why more publicity is required, given strokes can be life changing, or even worse, cause of death. As a side note, we mentioned the CRY charity, who provide ECGs for young people (no previous cardiac problems are required to meet the criteria) for no charge due to the rise in cardiac problems at sporting events (https://www.c-r-y.org.uk/screening/).

Ultra processed foods form the majority of energy consumption within the UK and since their introduction, non-communicable diseases have increased... a coincidence? We aim to discuss this novel area of science and bring light to arguably the biggest factor that can impact our health, our diet.

In todays episode we discuss GLP1's (glucagon-like-peptide-1 agonists), more commonly referred to 'The Skinny Jab' by the media.
Over the last few years they have become a revolutionary treatment option for people living with obesity, who previously wouldn't have had a bridge between over the counter orlistat and the more extreme bariatric surgery.
Unfortunately, due to influencers on social media sites documenting their journey of using the medication, branding it as a wonder drug that requires the user to not change anything within their lifestyle to loose significant amounts of weight. Coupled with them being highly accessible via online platforms, they are increasingly being used inappropriately. This has lead to a number of issues for patients and health professionals. We discuss these issues and provide practical information including; their mechanism of action, long term consequences and the potential dangers of GLP-1s when not used correctly, in line with national guidance.

In this week's podcast we discuss hypothyroidism (under active thyroid), a condition that affects approximately 3.5 million people in the UK and is often mistakenly blamed as the cause for people's weight gain. We discuss causes, treatment and complications and try to provide practical information to be able to interpret what it all means. Please note this is for informational purposes only and should not be a substitute to seeking medical advice.
