GLP-1- The wonder drug?

Sunday Mar 10, 2024

Sunday Mar 10, 2024

In todays episode we discuss GLP1's (glucagon-like-peptide-1 agonists), more commonly referred to 'The Skinny Jab' by the media.
Over the last few years they have become a revolutionary treatment option for people living with obesity, who previously wouldn't have had a bridge between over the counter orlistat and the more extreme bariatric surgery.
Unfortunately, due to influencers on social media sites documenting their journey of using the medication, branding it as a wonder drug that requires the user to not change anything within their lifestyle to loose significant amounts of weight. Coupled with them being highly accessible via online platforms, they are increasingly being used inappropriately. This has lead to a number of issues for patients and health professionals. We discuss these issues and provide practical information including; their mechanism of action, long term consequences and the potential dangers of GLP-1s when not used correctly, in line with national guidance.

In this week's podcast we discuss hypothyroidism (under active thyroid), a condition that affects approximately 3.5 million people in the UK and is often mistakenly blamed as the cause for people's weight gain. We discuss causes, treatment and complications and try to provide practical information to be able to interpret what it all means. Please note this is for informational purposes only and should not be a substitute to seeking medical advice.

In this episode we discuss diabetes MODY (maturity onset of diabetes in the young), which only accounts for 20-40,000 diagnoses in the UK. The reason being that Lee was diagnosed with this at the age of 10 and has had minimal intervention since, possibly due to the lack of knowledge surrounding genetic forms of diabetes.
As mentioned in the podcast, the following link can be accessed to calculate your risk of MODY and as always, if you have any concerns you should seek medical advice as this podcast is for information purposes only.
